Garmin Etrex Vista Hcx Overview
The Garmin Vista HCx GPS, brings a high sensitive receiver to Garmin's popular line of eTrex handheld units. It features a small GPS receiver and navigator with a color screen you can hold right in your hand. The Vista HCx is modeled after the original eTrex Vista, the color Vista C and the Vista Cx, which brought expandable memory to the eTrex series. Now it has a high sensitive receiver, although unlike other previous Garmin units, the high sensitive receiver chip is not a Sirf product, rather a MediaTek 3.
Designed for outdoor use, such as on the trail, hiking, geocaching, and biking, the HCx also can be used for highway use, if you purchase the Garmin CityNavigator maps. Overall, the unit operates nearly identical to the Vista Cx, with just a few minor changes. The only feature change in the Garmin Etrex Vista HCx is the ability to customize the routing color. The Vista HCx lists on the street for $299. Garmin has also upgraded its line of eTrex models with color screens and the high sensitive receiver, including the eTrex Summit HC, which includes an electronic compass and altimeter, the eTrex Venture HC, which does not have a card slot, but a limited amount of internal memory and does not have the ability to give road navigation, and the eTrex Legend HCx, which is identical to the Vista HCx, except the Legend does not have the electronic compass or altimeter.
Garmin Etrex Vista HCx GPS Receiver Unit
The Garmin Etrex Vista HCx is the same size as its color model predecessors. It has a color screen, a power/backlight key, a page key, map zoom in and out keys, the find key and the joystick key. While there is a card slot, no micro SD card is included in the unit package. I have used a 1GB card without any problem and you can find a 1GB micro SD card for around $25. This provides more than plenty of room for maps. Included in the Vista HCx package is the unit itself, loaded with a basic basemap, wrist strap, owners manual, a USB cable for computer use and MapSource Trip and Waypoint manager, which allows you to connect the HCx to a computer and manage your waypoints, routes and tracks. It contains a similar basemap that is loaded in your unit and does not have any specific map detail.
Garmin Etrex Vista HCx GPS Feature
The most important key on the Garmin Etrex Vista HCx is the page key, which is on the upper right hand side. This is how you bring up the different function pages, which are summarized below. I have found the best way to get acquainted with the unit, is to press the menu key on every page and you will usually find more features and functions that the HCx has the capability to do. Here is a photo of keys, starting on the right and going clockwise:

Garmin Etrex Vista HCx Customer Reviews
If you still hesitate to buy Garmin Etrex Vista HCx, you can read Garmin Etrex Vista HCx that i take below just to make sure that this product is the best for car GPS:
Great GPS!
"I work in Hawaiian native forests where the tree canopy can often be dense. I have also used a number of GPS units which always had difficulty detecting satellite signals under the tree canopy. So, having heard about the new HCx I bought one, took it out to the deepest forest canopy I could find and turned it on. In 30 seconds I had eleven signals. Amazing."

Great unit, great price
"The vista HCX rocks! It's more sensitive than the even the SiRF based units (76csx, 60csx), smaller, lighter, has a much brighter display and is even much cheaper. In fact I think that Garmin really made both the 76 and 60 obsolete with the release of the Vista hcx. I get 12 foot accuracy sitting inside the middle of my house with no view of windows! The electronic compass is an absolute dream. It works perfectly. I bought a 2 gig MicroSD card and loaded 75% of the TOPO US 2008 map. My only complaints are that the backlight setting gets lost after each power-off. Also the unit does not accumulate distance to the trip computer under 2.2 mph which is unacceptable for a hiking GPS unit. Garmin is aware of both of these issues and they should be addressed in a firmware update soon."

USER FRIENDLY,
"I got this to use for hunting and I've found it is useful for much more than just hunting. You can lock on waypoints when you find deer poo, watering holes, trails, rubbed bushes, etc...then you can come back and look at the computer and almost visualize the deers movements thus allowing you to put a stand up in a great place. I also use it to drive in unfamiliar areas. It's not as good as a car GPS but for a good overall use for everything it's great. However, you will need to buy the topographical and city navigator maps on the chip. Its easy because you just plug it in and go. The darn thing is almost idiot proof and tough as nails. I live in the mountains and it works great here in NC! Definetly would buy again since Amazon sold it for $212 and wal mart sells it for 299."

Best Unit for Biking or Hiking
"I spent 2 weeks surfing the Net for reviews of GPS units before I settled on this one. Couldn't be more satisfied. After I learned how the thing works, I mounted it on my mountain bike and went to a trail I had never been to before. I fell 3 times before I even got to the 2.5 mile marker. Fell 2 more times after that. Walked up half the hills, and spent the last 3 miles of the 15.5 mile trail riding in a major thunderstorm to get back to my van. Throughout all this, the Garmin never blinked, and never lost track. It's one rugged unit. Never had any of the problems people have reported in other reviews. If you are into biking, this is the one to get."
